6/24/09 | Ortiz Goes Deep to Lead Boston to Victory

David Ortiz started the Sox' scoring with a three-run shot. Jason Varitek also had a home run, as he launched a two-run shot giving the Sox a 6-1 lead at the time. Jon Lester had a decent outing, giving up 3 runs (all earned) over his six innings of pitching. He struggled a little bit with his fastball location, but was able to come up with the big out when he needed.

Justin Masterson pitched the 7th for the Red Sox, but almost gave up the lead, as he allowed a Christian Guzman RBI triple after former Red Sox Josh Bard doubled.

Julian Tavarez pitched for the Washington Nationals, the second time the Sox have seen the fun filled pitcher in the series. David Ortiz surpassed 1,000th career RBI with his three-run home run.
